How to set up Google Analytics 4 so the numbers add up

Most GA4 installs stop at the tag, and the default settings then quietly fill your reports with misleading numbers that nobody thinks to question.

Knowing how to set up Google Analytics 4 is not the hard part. Creating a property and adding a tag takes a few minutes, and plenty of Adelaide businesses have done exactly that and stopped. The trouble is what happens next: the default settings quietly throw away history, count your own staff as visitors and treat a page scroll as if it were a sale.

So the numbers look busy and mean very little.

    Why most GA4 setups mislead

GA4 ships with defaults that suit nobody in particular. It keeps detailed event data for only two months unless you change it. It has no idea which visits come from your office in Norwood or your sales team working from home. And its enhanced measurement feature will happily log events such as scrolls and outbound clicks, which look like engagement but say nothing about whether anyone actually enquired.

None of this shows up as an error. The reports still fill with charts. That is the danger, because a report that looks healthy gets trusted, and decisions about budgets, pages and campaigns get made on it.

We’d argue that a half-configured GA4 property is worse than none at all. With no data, you know you’re guessing. With misleading data, you don’t.

How to set up Google Analytics 4

If you’re starting from scratch, the install itself is short. Sign in to Google Analytics with a Google account the business owns, not one that belongs to a past employee or a web developer who may move on. Create an account for the business, then a property for the website.

Two choices at this stage are hard to undo later, so take a moment over them. Set the reporting time zone to Adelaide rather than Sydney, because our half-hour offset will otherwise push late evening enquiries into the wrong day. Set the currency to Australian dollars, even if you never plan to track revenue.

Then add a web data stream for your domain and install the Google tag. Most website platforms, including WordPress, Shopify and Squarespace, have a field or an official integration for the measurement ID, so you rarely need to touch the code. If you already use Google Tag Manager, add the tag there instead and keep everything in one place.

Check the install with the Realtime report while you browse the site on your phone. If your visit appears within a minute or so, the tag is working. If you’d like someone to look over the whole setup, including how tags load and whether anything is firing twice, that sits naturally alongside our technical SEO services.

    Settings people skip

This is where most installs fall short. Each of the following takes minutes, and together they decide whether you can trust anything GA4 tells you.

    • Data retention. In Admin, under data collection and modification, change event data retention from two months to the longest option available for a standard property. It only applies from the day you change it, which is why it belongs on day one.
    • Internal traffic. Define your office IP address as internal traffic in the data stream’s tag settings, then switch the internal traffic filter from testing to active. Until you activate it, the filter does nothing.
    • Unwanted referrals. If enquiries pass through a payment page or booking tool on another domain, list that domain so returning visitors are not credited to it.
    • Search Console link. Link your Search Console property under product links. You’ll see the queries that bring people to each landing page, right next to what they did after arriving.
    • Google Ads link. If you run ads, link the account so key events can be shared with your campaigns.
    • User access. Give agencies and developers their own logins with the lowest role they need, and remove people who have left.

Consent deserves a word too. If your site uses a cookie banner, check that it actually talks to GA4 through consent mode, rather than loading the tag regardless of what the visitor chose. Your privacy policy should also say that you use analytics. Neither step is complicated, but both are easy to forget once the site is live.

A report that looks healthy is the most dangerous kind, because nobody questions it.

    Tracking enquiries as key events

GA4 calls the actions you care about key events. They used to be called conversions, and you’ll still see that word in older guides and in Google Ads. Whatever the label, this is the setting that turns GA4 from a traffic counter into something that tells you which pages and channels bring in work.

Start by listing what a genuine enquiry looks like for your business. For a law firm in the Adelaide CBD it might be a completed contact form and a click on the phone number. For a defence supplier at Edinburgh it could be a capability statement download followed by a request for a quote. For a winery in the Barossa it may be a cellar door booking or a wine club sign-up.

Then track each one as precisely as you can. The most reliable method is usually a dedicated thank-you page that only loads after a successful form submission, with an event created when that page is viewed. Enhanced measurement has a form interactions option, but it often fires when someone merely starts a form, so treat it with caution and test it before relying on it.

Phone clicks are worth tracking on mobile, with the caveat that a tap is not the same as a completed call. If phone calls drive most of your new business, ask your phone provider whether it can report calls by source, and compare that with what GA4 records.

Mark only the events that represent real business value as key events. Five meaningful ones beat twenty vague ones, because every report that uses them becomes easier to read. And test each one yourself: submit the form, tap the number, then check that the event lands in Realtime with the right name.

Once that is in place, the questions you can answer change. Which landing pages produce enquiries rather than just visits? Do people who arrive from Google Business Profile behave differently from those who come through organic search? Is the new service page pulling its weight? That is the information an SEO agency Adelaide businesses work with should be reporting on, and it is information you can check for yourself.

    The takeaway

Installing GA4 is the easy ten minutes. The value comes from the settings after the install: longer data retention, filtering out your own visits, linking Search Console and, above all, tracking real enquiries as key events and testing them.

Do those once, properly, and the numbers start to mean something. Skip them, and GA4 will keep producing confident charts about very little.
